5 Things That You Shouldn't Do If You Have A Cracked Windshield

James Riley

If you have a cracked windshield on your car, you might be putting off having it fixed or replaced. It's important to have it done as soon as possible, and you might be surprised by how affordable it can be if you go to the right glass repair shop. However, there are a few things that you can do to prevent further damage in the meantime. Avoid these things, and you can help prevent your windshield crack from getting worse.

1. Driving Over Speed Bumps

If at all possible, try to avoid driving over speed bumps. The sudden jarring can cause the crack in your windshield to spread and get worse. If you can't avoid speed bumps in your day-to-day driving, you should at least drive as slowly as possible to help reduce the damage.

2. Running Your Defroster

Your defroster causes hot air to blow onto your windshield, and since heat can make windshield cracks worse, it can actually cause your crack to spread. Although you certainly should make sure that you have proper visibility when driving, it is best to avoid running your defroster if you can help it. Instead, try cracking the windows to allow a little bit of air in as a means of defrosting your windshield.

3. Parking In The Sun

Just as the heat from your defroster can cause your windshield crack to spread, the heat from the sun can cause problems as well. If at all possible, try parking your vehicle under a shelter. If this isn't an option, park underneath a shady tree to help reduce the amount of heat to which your windshield is exposed.

4. Scraping Your Windshield

It's generally best to avoid using an ice scraper to scrape your windshield. The ice scraper can get caught on your windshield cracks and can cause damage, or the added pressure can cause problems. Consider using a de-icing solution to get rid of ice and snow on your windshield instead.

5. Slamming Your Doors

It might be second nature to go ahead and slam your doors when you get in and out of your vehicle, but doing so can cause unnecessary jarring, which can make windshield cracks worse. Instead, be gentle when opening and closing the doors to your car.

If you want to prevent from doing added damage to your windshield, avoid these five things and you should be able to prevent further damage while you are waiting to see the glass repairman. One company you can contact for this service is Action Glass.

About Me
use glass to make small homes appear bigger

I have very small rooms in my house and I have spent many hours looking into ways to create a larger feel in the small spaces. My bathroom is especially small and I had to find a way to make it appear a lot larger than it really is. I decided that the best way for me to create the open feel that I wanted in the bathroom was to install a glass shower surround. I had my contractor remove the bathtub and install a walk-in shower that was completely enclosed with glass. This is just one way that I have used glass in my small home. Go to my site to find out other ways that you can use glass to make smaller homes appear bigger.
